Carpet Day

This past weekend was a time that I had long dreaded. My parents long ago decided that the entire house needed to be re-carpeted, and the day for which that would happen was yesterday. While they paid to have the carpet installers move the heavy furniture our of their respected rooms, the preparation work of moving the abundance of small items was reserved for Saturday and Sunday.
The TVs and their respective connections (DVD/VCR players, cable boxes), the computer, entertainment center all had to come apart. All lamps, floor decorations, items stored on closet floors and other misc. items throughout the various rooms had to be moved. If moving everything isn’t fun enough, then finding the amount of dust that has built up in the various nooks and crannies, and cleaning all that up adds a whole lot more to the experience.
The actual process of having the carpet installed is what I think of as the eye of the storm. The work prior to their arrival is hectic in trying to move everything out. Then, during the installation process, all the big furniture is scattered in the kitchen and various other rooms, and there is nothing for you to do. You simply wait (I had taken the day off from work; lucky me), full knowing that once they are finished and take off, you have all the work of putting the small stuff back into place.
Reconnecting the big screen TV back to the cable box, DVD player and such was a worry of mine – just because of all the wires and specific connections involved. My other concern was taking apart the router and cable modem for Internet and putting it back together afterwards. Luckily, I didn’t screw anything up in the process and everything was back up and running by the end of the night.
There is a sense of satisfaction after the entire process is complete. As things were moved back into their respected places and the house began to look normal again, there was a sense of relief and accomplishment – in addition to the added assurance that the respected rooms have never been cleaner, at least since we moved in.
It didn’t take long however, until that feeling of gloom and doom hit the bottom of my stomach, when I realized that while everything is spotless now, it won’t take long until I look behind my dresser or computer desk and find a fresh buildup of dirt and dust.
I can hardly wait.
